CRX is the file format for Chrome extension files. Click on the Get CRX Extension button next to the URL bar and select the “Get CRX from this extension” option from the context menu. Once installed, go to the Chrome Web Store page for the extension you want to back up. To download an extension from the Chrome Web Store and not install it automatically, you must install the Get CRX extension from the Chrome Web Store. This is where you will download the file. To back up a Chrome extension, it must always be available in the Chrome Web Store. Either way, it's a good idea to back up a Chrome extension that you can't work with. A developer can decide to remove their extension from the store or Google can change their mind and delete it. All extensions in the Chrome Web Store have been approved by Google, but they can still be removed at any time. Developers primarily use Github when it comes to distributing an extension outside of the Chrome Web Store and resort to it when an extension is unlikely to be approved. Chrome extensions exist in one of two places in the Chrome Web Store or wherever a developer sees fit to distribute them.
